May is a fantastic time to visit Cornwall. The days are long, the weather is generally good and there are less people around, so you can enjoy some of our most beautiful sites in perfect solitude. What’s more there is always a lot to do in and around the Bude area so you will always have a new experience to enjoy.
We’ve put together our pick of the best activities in the Bude area this May so you can make the most of our amazing May deals and book your last minute break.
On Saturday Make Gin and be Merry
Start off your break on Saturday with a Gin making masterclass at the An Mor Hotel. You can choose from a morning or afternoon session and spend 4 hours learning the history of gin, tasting different gin flavours, designing your own gin recipe and producing a personal bottle to take home. Finish the experience with a gin cocktail and a slow stroll back to your caravan!
Enjoy a Guided Sunday Stroll
On Sunday join Harry McConville for a guided circular walk taking you towards the harbour along the historic Canal, the sea-lock and breakwater. Then up over the cliffs to Efford Beacon with spectacular views to Lundy Island and King Arthur’s Tintagel and eventually to the Coastguard Cottages at Upton cliffs. You will drop back inland down lovely country lanes to Rodd’s Bridge and the canal towpath. Finally take time to explore Bude’s Nature Reserve on the return.
Go Potty on Monday
On Monday, tap in to your creative side by taking an adult pottery workshop led by Angelique at the Pottery Box. Angelique is a professional, highly qualified ceramicist of over 20 years and believes that pottery can be enjoyed by everybody. Complete beginners are welcomed, with the only requirement being that you bring along your imagination!
On Tuesday Tour Bude’s History and Heritage
On Tuesday take a visit to the Castle Bude Heritage Centre, where you can find out more about the local history including shipwrecks, Bude Canal and the long local tradition of lifesaving. The Castle also displays regular art exhibitions of local artists.
Wet and Wild Wednesday
On Wednesday, get in, or on the water with a range of different activities available. Visit beautiful Bude Sea Pool. Created in 1930s to provide a safe place to swim, Bude Sea Pool continues to offer a safe haven for open swimming for all ages and abilities.
Try your hand at one of Cornwall’s biggest exports and take a surf lesson with one of the many Bude based surf schools; or experience the canal from a kayak and indulge in a gentle paddle downstream.
A Walk with Dr. Roger on Thursday
On Thursday take a Geology walk with Dr. Roger Higgs, a local expert who will show you around one of the most fascinating geological areas in Cornwall. As well as some spectacular rock formations, fossilized remains have also been found to evidence life forms from an era when and Bude’s climate was similar to modern Africa. Bude even has its own unique fossilised fish species (a toothy, goldfish-sized blighter called Cornuboniscus budensis) found nowhere else in the world. https://www.visitbude.info/event/geology-walk/2017-05-18/
On Friday finish off your week with a gorgeous meal of local fish and seafood at the Falcon Hotel, the oldest coaching hotel in North Cornwall. With two courses on offer for just £20, you can choose from 5 different main courses including “catch of the day” and enjoy the plush surroundings of the sophisticated Lord Tennyson Restaurant.
